Final Campaign/WHERE I'M GOING

My campaign is to raise awareness about the experience of African Americans in their pursuit of STEM and to discuss the complications, discriminations and underrepresentation of African Americans in these fields.

Site Visit, The Student Research Symposium:

At the symposium, I got to meet and talk to a lot of students involved in STEM research here at TCU. A good amount of were minorities. Pictured above is Chandler Baskerville, an environmental science major who spoke to us about his research in surveying the importance of trees on campus. I also got the honor of asking Chandler about his experience as an African American pursuing environmental science. We related over the lack of representation however he motivated me in saying that through dedication and persistence, he is working everyday to seek out his career goals regardless of the complications of being a minority in STEM.

"There's a lot of struggle being a minority at a PWI. Some oppression comes from external sources in the form of discrimination but from my experience, most is self-inflicted. I think this is because our awareness of being a marginalized people can keep us from existing comfortably in environments in which nobody looks like us or can relate to our experience" (Baskerville).
