I’m from behind the opening garage door. I put my feet on each pedal and zipped down the driveway. Around the curve out of the neighborhood, swerving left past the Slim Chicken. I never knew if I really liked biking along the main road. Some days I felt like another busy driver on my way from A to B. Other days I felt the pressures of their eyes staring at the back of my neck. Regardless of how I felt riding there, once I got to the court, basketball in bag, with my friends waiting for me, every negative thought and feeling went away for a while.

A I came to seeing blue and black little silhouettes lining the outside of my vision. It took me a second to realize I was looking up at the sky, and those dark silhouettes were my friends looking down at me. What had happened? Trying to piece it together caused a sharp pain to shoot from behind my eyes to the back of my head. Upon finally getting up to my feet, I felt an excruciating pain stemming up from my leg.

My ears were ringing as I speedily jumped out of the car. In doing so, I was able to see the hole punched through the roof of the car. I could still hear that shot echoing across the sky. I ducked back in to see if Rob was okay.

I always hated the smell of tobacco as it came through the back door and lingered on my brother’s clothes. Yet, here I was with him in the backyard. He struck a flame, inhaled deeply, exhaled, then extended his arm out to me. He must be crazy I thought.

I rested the book on the nightstand. The sky was dark although it was 2pm in the afternoon. The wind was still howling and raging as rain crashed against the roof. I put my headphones in, and stared out the window.
